Johnston Civil Ltd currently employs staff from the local Selwyn district and Christchurch areas. Our staff varies in experience and qualification and complete all work to a high standard with pride and commitment.

This coupled with the large inventory of plant and machinery makes the company a very versatile and efficient operation.

Senior Leadership Team

Paul Johnston / Managing Director

Johnston Excavating & Drainage Ltd was started by Paul in 1978, the company becoming Johnston Civil Ltd in 2013. Paul has taken the company from employing only himself, to present day where it currently employs approximately 55 people from in and around the Selwyn and Christchurch areas. Paul is a strategic leader who is able to steer the company towards the most profitable direction whilst also implementing its vision, mission and long term goals. Paul ensures the company is constantly moving towards fulfilling its short-term and long-term objectives, ensuring it does not diverge from its strategic guidelines. Paul ensures all company policies and legal guidelines are communicated all the way from the top down in the company and that they are followed at all times. Paul has numerous strengths, but by far is his ability to communicate and maintain trust relationships with shareholders, business partners and authorities.

Steve Guy / General Manager

Steve has over 20 years experience operating around the world, working in both the private and public sectors. Steve has a Bachelor of Applied Management (BAM), majoring in Project Management, and has worked for some of Canterbury’s largest civil construction companies, across multiple projects. Steve contributes to the continuous development and implementation of Johnstons organisational strategies, systems, policies, procedures and business practices.  In addition, Steve is closely aligned to the Managing Director and his goals and objectives to ensure successful business and financial outcomes for the company, the delivery of quality work for clients and development of a positive staff environment. Steve is in the key leadership role to drive change, improvement and proactive thinking across the business in conjunction with the Managing Director and external advisors.

Sharon Carrick / Corporate Services Manager

Sharon is a dynamic member of the Johnston's team who holds a key role in the management of the companys overall performance. Sharon contributes to the continuous development and implementation of organisational strategies, systems, policies, procedures and business practices.  Sharon drives change, improvement and proactive thinking across the business in conjunction with the General Manager and Managing Director, as well as other external advisors. Sharons primary roles is ensuring the smooth running of the office and administrative services, by providing proactive support to the wider management team, maximising results.

Operational Delivery Team

Mario Lunjevich / Senior Contracts Manager

Mario has significant knowledge and experience in the civil construction sector coming from a background where he has worked across the wholes of New Zealand for some of the country's largest civil construction organisations. Mario is integral to the profitability of the company, from pricing work, through to measuring project performance. Mario conducts regular project reviews ensuring the company meets its targeted project financial and quality performance requirements, in turn resulting in maximising project performance. Mario holds a key position that integral to the smooth delivery across all contracts / projects.

Paul Cooper / Operations Manager

Paul is a proactive and pragmatic manager who ensures all labour, plant and materials arrive at the right location, at the right time. Paul has superb analytical and business skills, which are delivered to employees on the ground in a manner resulting in complete understanding and buy in. One of his main objectives is to ensure Johnstons meets its projected timelines, requiring him to analyse and assess the operational and financial risks across all projects and help the company to select the most commercially viable options available. Paul has significant multitasking skiils which enable him to prioritise projects according to urgency or client demands, and effectively delegate tasks to project managers.

Harry Miles / Project Manager
Harry Miles spent 5 years as Clerk of Works in Australia before immigrating to New Zealand where he was initially employed by Laing Contractors Ltd as Project Manager. Harry has been involved in site works, drainage, sub-division work, roading, retaining walls etc. He is well known and respected around the Canterbury area for his knowledge and can do attitude. Harry is a valuable asset to the Company with his field design, levels and set out experience, construction knowledge, involvement with industry technology and makes the difficult issues simple. Along with his keen sense of humour Harry is an enjoyable team player and a real asset to Johnston Civil Ltd.
